Do not underestimate the power of making small changes.
Too often we become focused that massive success in business takes MASSIVE action and sometimes less is more.
Let me explain.
I’ve recently been reading “Atomic Habits” by James Clear.
He tells the story of the British Cycling coach Dave Brailsford who took over as head coach in 2003. Before then the British Cycling team had achieved what some describe as “mediocre” success but Brailsford was set to change that.
Over the next few years Dave Brailsford and his team of coaches started making small but obvious adjustments to some of the training and equipment that the Team had access to.
Things like making the bike seats more comfortable, rubbed alcohol on the tyres for better grip on the track and tested a range of more aero dynamic materials for their kits.
Those improvements did have an impact.
Brailsford didn’t stop there though.
He and his team continued to identify and make small improvements in areas that were possibly a bit more unexpected and less obvious.
They tested different types of massage gels to see which one led to the fastest muscle recovery within the team.
They hired a surgeon to teach each rider the best way to wash their hands to reduce the chances of catching a cold.
They even determined the type of pillow and mattress that led to the best night’s sleep for each rider – especially important when they were competing away from home!
Hundreds of these and other small improvements were made and over time they accumulated and the outcome?
The British team’s results came bigger and faster than anyone could have imagined!
So why am I telling you this and what’s it got to do with YOUR business?
It’s often our ego’s that drive us to want make BIG changes because they’re exciting and we anticipate BIG results from them.
I’ve learnt, over time that you must focus on whether you’re on the right track not whether the result is big and bold enough.
The truth is that often, the small improvements aren’t always earth shattering fundamental changes.
Those changes are usually hardly noticeable although they’re far more impactful, especially in the long run.
We often dismiss small changes because they don’t seem to matter very much in this exact moment.
The difference a tiny improvement can make over time is astounding.
Think about it like this.
If you strive to get 1% better at <insert your own thing in here> each day how much improvement would you see by the end of this month….
“Success is the product of daily habits—not once-in-a-lifetime transformations.”
Are your habits putting you on the pathway to success or do you need to change some of your daily habits?
